With nearly 20,000 acres of public lands and protected private property, this side of the Blue Ridge Escarpment is a sanctuary for several rare plants and animals, and hosts a bustling tourism scene rooted in outdoor recreation. Major trailheads include Strawberry Gap, Upper Hickory Nut Gorge, Bearwallow Gap, Eagle Rock, Buffalo Creek Park, Chimney Rock Village Boulders, Chimney Rock at Chimney Rock State Park, and Dittmer-Watts Nature Trail Park.
