A Lazy Float or a Whitewater Workout: The French Broad Has It All!

A Lazy Float or a Whitewater Workout: The French Broad Has It All!

Hello, My name is Chris and I’m one of the owners of Second Gear. As a guy moving into his 50s, I’ve had several different jobs, but my job as a river guide on Section 9 of the French Broad was one of the most impactful. When I started guiding, I had very little experience on moving water, but something about it felt right and natural. I loved to hike and be in nature, but I had never been so fully immersed in a wild and unpredictable environment as I was while guiding. I found a confidence I never knew I could tap into and I found a peace I’ve struggled to reproduce anywhere else. I was a guide for over 10 years, but as time went on and my responsibilities grew, I left the guiding world to pursue “real jobs.”

After giving up my job as a guide, I realized I had more time to experience the river on my terms. I wasn’t tied to the clock when I went out on the river. I didn’t have to run the company lines. I was free to explore the river and everything it has to offer. So that’s what I did.

I still try to paddle once a week, weather and my achy lower back permitting. Now, when I paddle, I don’t have to run the hardest line or take the biggest hits. I can enjoy just being out there. Finding a shady spot to stop and watch the river and other paddlers go by is the priority now. That’s the really beautiful thing about the French Broad; it meets you where you’re at.

That’s the message I want to convey to everyone who lives here or visits Asheville, NC. There’s something for everyone on the French Broad. If you are looking for a little adrenaline and beautiful scenery, then Section 9 is the place for you, with up to Class IV rapids and a vantage point for viewing beautiful scenery that you won’t find anywhere else. There are several great outfitters in the area, and it's a trip you might just want to make a tradition for years to come.

Maybe you’re not looking for adrenaline, though. Well, the French Broad has you covered there too. The sections through the city and further south to the headwaters (yes, the river runs south to north) could be what you are looking for. These sections are made for floating at a relaxed pace. Outfitters in town offer kayaks and tubes so you can move at your own pace or just let the river do the work. Whatever way you choose to explore the French Broad, you can’t go wrong. So make your plans today, and maybe I’ll see you on the water!

P.S: Second Gear has your back. Gear up and get out there!
